2 in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

The tour, which ends Feb. 15 in St. John will feature Aglukark with her four piece band, including drums, bass, piano and guitar.

The first Inuk artist to win a Juno Award, Aglukark says Dream is a chance to share the journey of her Inuit ancestors, and how this journey shapes and defines contemporary Inuit.

While Aglukark career so far has spanned more than 25 years, with awards ranging from honorary doctorate degrees to the Order of Canada, success has not sat easily with her, she says.

was this constant little voice that kept second guessing, and (saying), don belong and I would say that that added greatly to a lot of anxiety around the career.

album was a personal exercise for me to see if I could get back in there and get past this voice, get past the second guessing, get past the anxiety that that brings up, and it worked. adds that growing up in Arviat, Nunavut, there was no opportunity to learn we were, the Inuit, from our own perspective, explaining how various institutions told her who she was.

when you are told a story for so long, you learn to believe it. over the course of two decades worth of reflection through her songwriting,

Aglukark says, she began to learn more about her ancestors.

people in general, and in my case, Inuit people specifically, were a brilliant, organized society, she said. had engineers, they had doctors, they had health professionals, they had systems in place to help manage their life and the different challenges in their lives.

the stuff that we need to go back to, to understand better who our ancestors were, and to identify better ourselves as Inuit in this new world not as people who needed to be saved, but people who come from an incredible culture, and a history, and those are the heroes we need to be reading and writing about. hopes that through her new album, also titled Dream, and through these upcoming concerts, audiences will walk away with a better understanding of this.

The album is set for release in April, marking her tenth album to date, and a special one for her personally. She describes it as one that brings her story full circle, from being caught between the Indigenous and the western world,
dr marten sandal Susan Aglukark takes 'Winters Dream' tour across Newfoundland and Labrador
to a place where she finally feels comfortable with who she is.

Aglukark explains that Dream is an idea that has been in her mind for several years.

often get asked, did we come from? and the funnier question, did we stay? A person needs to experience it to understand why we love the North so much, and all of its seasons. The land is such a big part of the people, forming and shaping who we are as people, and the seasons along with it and Dream is just a play on, maybe just possibly winter chose us. Aglukark says she believes the Inuit are in the midst of a crisis. Inuit, we know very well who we are, but the world is changing so fast, and so much, and so constantly, that our culture itself has not caught up with this change.

so, the more I learned about the people, the more I understand our role as artists in creating that new culture that we can then pass down to the young generations, so they know who they are, and how they function, in their new Nunavut, in their new world. work with youth is something that is near to her heart. Just this month, her Arctic Rose Foundation launched its first program called Creative Cultural Reflections, an arts driven program for youth to explore their cultural backgrounds.

Aglukark explains that her hope is young people will use art as a form of self discovery to reconnect with who they are as Indigenous people, in much the same way she has done throughout her career most notably with this most recent work.

doc marten floral boots Survey to address Richmond’s doctor shortage

“We estimate that in Richmond about 6,000 people do not have their own family doctor,” said Kliman, who has spent the past 30 years treating patients in the community. “And it’s likely only going to get worse.”

A survey done in 2012 showed that almost a third of the 120 to 140 family physicians in Richmond were going to retire over the next five years.

The survey is being organized by the Richmond Division of Family Practice which was formed in 2010 to give family physicians one voice to influence health care delivery and policy.

According to the survey’s website, the information being collected will be used to better understand the healthcare experiences and needs of community members.

And that is expected to help Richmond residents who want a family doctor to get one. Plus, it will strengthen a primary care system centred on continuous family doctor patient relationships.

That last point is a vital one, said Kliman.

“Every study that’s ever been done will say that if you have access to a family doctor, and have a good bond with them, your (health) outcome is going to be better,” Kliman said. “And that’s going to cost the system less by way of efficiencies and improvements. Everybody benefits from this.”

But with the average patient load for a GP ranging from 800 to 1,500, servicing the 6,

000 or so now who don’t have a doctor is not a simple mathematical solution of adding more doctors.

For one, recruitment and retention of doctors is an ongoing problem, in part due to the high cost of living in the Lower Mainland, Kliman suggested. Plus, the geographical distribution of those patients needing a family doctor can be widespread. In addition, their medical needs, and other barriers language and levels of poverty are factors.

Walk in clinics take up some slack but aren’t an ideal situation.

“Episodic care is okay. But the real benefit to the whole healthcare system, and to the patient in particular, is to have that strong relationship with a family physician who recognizes that you are their patient.”

An aging population of local doctors is a situation that hits close to home for Kliman who operates out of a six doctor office on Chatham Street. There, three of the physicians are beyond retirement age and have no immediate plans to stop working, partly because they enjoy what they do, but also because they are unsure what will happen to their patient base will they all get continuing care from a family doctor.

Supervalu has been gobbling up cooperatively owned wholesalers and in the process has greatly expanded its reach to supermarkets focused on Hispanic customers.

Then this month the company agreed to acquire Associated Grocers of Florida, which had become the nation sixth largest cooperative wholesaler, for $180 million. In between, Supervalu acquired the warehouse of another cooperative wholesaler, Joliet, Ill. based Central Grocers, which was in bankruptcy, for $61 million.

Both Unified and AG of Florida have a significant customer base serving Hispanic consumers on the West Coast and in the Southeast, respectively.

obviously investing significantly in what I’ll call the Hispanic market, said Mark Gross, president and CEO of Supervalu, during the company second quarter earnings call.

By expanding its base of Hispanic focused supermarket shoppers, Supervalu may be able to procure specialized product for these customers at lower costs, although the two markets are quite different in terms of the Hispanic consumer segments they serve.

Unified supermarket customer base in Southern California is largely of Mexican origin, while customers served by AG of Florida are more likely to be of Cuban or other Caribbean backgrounds.

In Southern Florida, Supervalu will be competing against a new alliance between Amazon and a company called El Latino, based in Doral, Fla.,

to distribute deliver food products targeting Hispanics. Amazon opened a new warehouse in June in Wynwood, Fla., that is designed to serve Hispanic shoppers in the region, according a report in the Miami Herald. Census data, the newspaper reported.

New warehouse space

The acquisition of AG of Florida gives Supervalu about 1.5 million new square feet of warehouse space in Florida, all of which is owned by the company rather than leased. It includes facilities in Pompano Beach and Ocala. The warehouses feature the Vocollect voice command selection process and use the Priya warehouse management system, according to AG website.

Supervalu currently operates a 787,000 square foot warehouse in Quincy, Fla., in the panhandle at the opposite end of the state.

Supervalu rival C Wholesale Grocers, meanwhile, operates five facilities in Florida, according to that company website. They include locations in Miami, Baldwin, Orlando, Jacksonville and Plant City.

AG of Florida had been one of several cooperative wholesalers that saw its membership increase significantly in the wake of the 2003 bankruptcy of Fleming Cos., an event that also led to the company becoming an IGA distributor. AG of Florida added about 60 members because of the Fleming bankruptcy, it said at the time,

I reading in Saturday paper about Super bowl locations know I don agree with you. You said football is a cold weather sport, its not a cold weather sport. No more than baseball should be played on Sunday night or in the cities in April and October in the Northern cities. If you watch TV, perfect football weather is the end of October beginning of November,

Sorry, but that nonsense. Football players make millions to play a game. It a fall and winter sport. weather for football is a preposterous concept. Football players should be able to play in any and all weather conditions. Some of the best games have been played in the snow and rain and cold.

Two representatives from the SUNY administration are scheduled to meet with concerned SUNY Plattsburgh students Monday after a racist photo circulated social media this week, prompting protests and calls for some campus leaders to resign.

“Things have been stressful,” Student Association president Jessica Falace said. “I can’t imagine what it’s like for some other students who are really closely effected by this. I can say that we’re trying to do everything we can to keep the positive change moving forward.”

SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling notified students Saturday about the opportunity to speak with the representatives in an email addressed to the “campus community.”

Ettling said Carlos Medina,

vice chancellor and chief diversity officer, and Teresa Miller, chief of staff and senior vice chancellor for strategic initiatives,

“As we move into further conversations, change and addressing deeper problems at more comprehensive levels, it is important for the entire campus community to do this together,

building bridges and acting from the heart,” he said in the email. “I care about each of you and will work to make sure each student is safe and valued. I ask you to join me in that effort.”

Falace said she believed the smaller sessions would help students better understand the broader SUNY system and see beyond the Plattsburgh campus specifically.

“At this point, we’ve been having so many conversations that people are ready for change,

” Falace said. “By going through the conversations, I’m hoping that we’ll reach change. I think some students will feel as though their voice has been heard in this smaller setting and in talking to some representatives who are higher up.”

Falace said she was working Sunday to match students who requested a seat in the sessions with Medina and Miller.

Students who requested a seat in one of Monday’s six scheduled sessions are set to be notified Sunday afternoon. The sessions are being capped at approximately 30 students.

Dusty Dexter PI is a continuous novel by Jan Richards. You can read a new installment each weekday in your local paper, or catch up on the week happenings online each Saturday.

Episode 11: Adrenaline and caffeine

Seachange is on the Esplanade, metres from the beach. It sandwiched between a juice bar and a surfwear shop and has seating for 60, partially under cover of the monolith above.

The cafe buzzing with adrenaline and caffeine. Maria hands me a latte, goes back to the espresso machine.

Janet chats up a bloke I don know. I interrupt their tete a tete.

“Dusty, this is Evan; he a marine scientist, studying loggerhead turtles, works at Ocean World.”

For Janet,

journalism a lifestyle choice not just a career, almost any conversation can become an opportunity for investigative questioning. She been at work on Evan.

I join them. “Hi Evan. Just saw a turtle having breakfast.”

“Quite a few live off the Coast here,” he indicates the ocean. “We studying their habitats. They endangered.”

He mid forties, short cropped hair, dark, some grey. Stocky, but pretty fit.

I nod, down a glass of water, sip coffee.

Janet enlightens Evan. “Dusty got a hangover. We had a few drinks last night,

celebration. Today her first day as a PI. She on Manny case. You know? Guy who washed up on the beach, shot, shark took his arm.”

I let him know how close I am to the action.

“It was me found him, pulled him up onto the beach, found Thommo too.”

Janet elaborates. “They arrested Dusty for the murder. She got there first, his blood was still wet. The gun was on the bed right beside her when the cops arrived. Then she accidentally shot the sergeant with her taser. That didn help.”

Can rely on Janet to give all the facts.

I not sure if he laughing at the story, at me, or at Janet. Don like it.

“They dropped the charges. Well most of them.”

Janet changes the subject part flirting, part journalist. “Tell me about loggerhead turtles. How come they endangered?”

I leave her to him,

concentrate on the coffee.

Pete waves at me, sweaty in running shorts and singlet, elastic bandage around one knee, slurps from his water bottle.

Road bikes are stacked against railings, helmets on the handlebars, backpacks filled with towels thrown on the floor.

I peer between bodies and the blades of pandanus at the water. Three trawlers are anchored in the bay, booms out over their sides, nets in the water. Where there are prawns and trawlers there are sharks, but I don mind swimming when the trawlers are out,

Wonder if Janet new chum the marine scientist knows about sharks, might be able to shed some light on the mysterious movements of Manny arm.

He draws an imaginary line on the table top, the curve of the bay.

“Shark attacked him outside the river mouth.” He places two sugar sachets side by side to mark the mouth of the river.
