27 seconds in, Brandon Campos is off for boarding.
The Bees have their first SHG of the year at the 1:11 mark on a goal by Aaron Lee. Jason Dixon fired the puck on net and Scott Reid served up a rebound to Lee, who was in front and tucked it in. Gee, get to the front of net.
And we have the first throwdown. Kyle Radke and David Nimmo got it going at the 8:45 mark of the first. Radkegot two for roughing and elbowing. Nimmo got two for roughing.
And with about 10:30 left, Scott Balan crashed into the boards during a shift. He stayed in the game but skated very gingerly to the bench.
Balan took his next shift. Of course he did.
Somebody who deserves more credit is Jason Dixon. He’s done a fine job between Aaron Lee and Zac Pearson. Still 2 1 with 7:43 left in the first.
One thing the Bees aren’t doing well tonight is taking care of the puck in their own zone. Zona has put on a lot of forechecking pressure and the Bees need to do a better job of dealing with it.
With 5:25 left, Lee, Pearson and Dixon combined for a pretty tic tac toe that ended with a shot by Dixon that trickled wide. Next trip down, Lee drew a hook on Luke Erickson. Good shift.
Now with 3:25 left, Tim Billingsley drew a slash on JP Chabot. 27 seconds of a 5 on 3 for the Bees.
Just after the first PP expired, Dan Gendur beat Reid from the high slot with a sharp wrister. Adam Bartholomay and Jake Hauswirth the assists. 3 1 Bees at the 17:03 mark.
The Bees lead 4 1 now at the 18:26 mark on a goal by Tomas Klempa. Gendur and Bartholomay the assists. That was on the Bees’ 20th shot.
With 1:06 left, Boogaard and Tyler Matheson got into it off the draw. I was going to say Boogaard shouldn’t have fought as Matheson was trying to spark Arizona. But Boogaard,
uh, made sure there would be no momentum for Arizona.
The Bees will have 1:57 of a PP to start the second after Jeff Martens was dinged for holding. 4 1 Bees after 1.
Arizona is tailor made for the Bees. Their game is just forechecking like crazy. But a team that’s disciplined like the Bees can get through it. And with Arizona’s defensive issues, a cut up forecheck leads to repeated prime chances. It’s also obvious why Arizona takes so many penalties. It seems like they’re always playing catch up, leading to a lot of calls. Against a team with a PP converting at 23.2 percent like the Bees, that’s deadly.
Levente Szuper is now in net for Arizona.
Like I was saying. On a PP, Brandon Campos got the rebound of a Dan Gendur rocket from the point and jammed it home at the 43 second mark. Jake Hauswirth with the other assist.
Arizona is really struggling in its own zone. The Bees have tons of room to work with.
Kyle Radke is in the box for interference with 15:50 left in the period.
The Bees lead 5 1 with 13:40 left after killing the PP. They have to be careful if Arizona tries to goon it up, so to speak.
10:49 left and 5 1 Bees. With 11:30 left, Tomas Klempa went down in the slot to block a shot. That’s got to please Terry Ruskowski.
Zona’s Corey Toy is off for interference with 9:01 left. Another chance for the Bees PP.
Arizona killed the PP but it’s still 5 1 Bees. Levente Szuper was the big reason for that.
Adam “The Capitalist” Smyth and Jason Beeman got coincidental minors at 13:38 of the second.
4:05 left and still 5 1. The Bees have kind of let off the gas pedal a bit.
Bees lead 5 1 through 2. Pretty strong effort.
With the Bees ona PP, Zona’s David Nimmo forced a turnover and got in on Murray. He was stopped, and his momentum took him into Murray, knocking his helmet off. Murray was fine. 15:41 left and 5 1 Bees.
