Since 2015, California State Parks has closed the area known as Rock in Mount Diablo State Park to visitors annually from Feb.1 July 31 to help protect the American peregrine falcon.
This protected species is territorial and highly sensitive during nesting season. The rocks located in Pine Canyon are closed to all access during these same months each year.
The distinctive Castle Rock formations are located within Mount Diablo State Park, and visitors often access them from the East Bay Regional Park District’s Stage Road Trail, which follows Pine Creek through the Park District’s Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area and Diablo Foothills Regional Park before entering Mount Diablo State Park.
The off limits area includes all of Mount Diablo State Park’s Castle Rock area east of the Stage Road Trail and Pine Creek. The Stage Road Trail itself is not affected and will remain open. Pine Creek is the boundary between Mount Diablo State Park and the two adjacent regional parklands.

If you go to Castle Rock Park, you may see a member of the Peregrine Team there. We an all volunteer bunch of natural history docents from the Diablo Region working with the staffs of Castle Rock and Mount Diablo State Parks. We try to talk to hikers and potential climbers about the closure zone, the peregrines, and the whole nourishing habitat of Pine Canyon they think about trespassing. It not just peregrines that nest in those rocks, but more than 50 other species of birds, bats, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods, not to mention all the plants, lichens, and mosses. If you have questions about the closure, the birds, or the P Team itself, please leave a comment here. And thanks to Claycord for getting this word out.
Went up to the peak 2 3 years ago during the falcon season didn see the signs and ended up in this giant enclave on the back side of the mountain peak next thing you know, we hear a bird call that was extremely powerful 2 minutes later, eagles were flying towards us from all directions they started swooping around us and circling us so we pretty much full sprint ran out of there through the bushes ended up dodging a bush full of bees, but had to jump down a small drop on to a tree to get away that was one of the scariest moments i experienced in my life of prey chasing you down for being in their nesting area never again.
