When Butch decided to make a move from Los Angeles to an area more conducive to raising a family he referred to the Internet. He programmed what he wanted in a town and Grand Junction came up as number one. Several days later he saw an opening for a TV weatherman on the Western Slope.
Butch was born in Muleshoe, Texas and grew up on a farm near Bovina in the Texas Panhandle. “We have the fastest dogs in the world out there, because the trees are so far apart” quips Butch. He worked his way through college as a disc jockey at local radio stations.
His first TV job was in Amarillo, then he moved to Tyler, Texas. From Tyler, he was offered a job in Oklahoma City to join his brother Ben hosting a morning show. The McCain Brothers, with Ben anchoring the news and Butch forecasting the weather, dominated morning TV for 12 years, at one time with a 58 share. Butch interviewed country singer Garth Brooks when Garth made his TV debut on their morning show.
Butch has more than 15 years of weather experience in the heart of tornado alley and has done the weather for ABC’s Good Morning America, and hosted live feature segments for the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles.
Butch has appeared in more than a dozen independent films such as “BioDome” starring Stephen Baldwin, “Humanoids from the Deep” starring Robert Carradine and Emma Samms, “Midnight Blue” with Harry Dean Stanton and Dean Stockwell, “Born Bad” with Corey Feldman and James Remar. His most recent was in Oregon with long time friend actor/director Bruce Campbell called “My Name is Bruce” where Butch plays two roles. Butch and his brother also wrote and perform the theme song “The Legend of Guan di.” Some people have said they can’t get the song out of their head. Butch has performed skits for numerous TV shows including several appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show and the legendary show Hee Haw where he dressed up like the weather girl. He’s also appeared in a variety of other shows: In the House, Martial Law, Nickelodeon’s All That and Keenan and Kel. He’s had guest starring roles in several soap operas: All My Children, Loving and General Hospital.
Butch has been feature in national commercials,
including a Super Bowl commercial for Pepsi where he played a sportscaster. The commercial features NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon, Butch says ‘Stick a fork in Gordon he’s done.’
His favorite activities are spending time with his wife of 24 years, Betty, and two children: Augusta, 14, and Mac, 11. Butch enjoys traveling, (favorite places include: Fiji, Barbados, Dominica, Australia, New Zealand, Italy/Sicily and Ireland), playing guitar, song writing, hiking, scuba diving,
farming/raising cattle and being outdoors
